Unknown PS2 Multitap (27/01/2025)

Oh dear, a whole new blog after months? What about the other blogs that I left on the main blog page that you can't even access yet? I admit, I have been very slow (and busy) to return to this. Despite having so much to say that would perhaps count as an internet blog, I never really considered to put them here and for those I did, I kept them personal with my close circle instead. I still haven't eased myself on talking over the internet I suppose but most of it is that I am being lazy and I sometimes quickly judge it to be a lame worthless blog.

However, that might now change!

I figured I could just talk about random things for whatever purpose, I don't necessarily need to justify everything I post online (within reason) since this is my site and I already have a vision for what I would like it to be, so I shouldn't worry so much about the blog content as much as I am when I am thinking about posting. Sometimes, you just got to stop with excuses and just do it, see what works and roll with what you have.

So lets start with this small device!

A few years ago, I found this multitap for the PS2 in my attic, I never saw it as a child so this gizmo was new to me and I thought it was very cool to have! A PS2 to have only 2 memory cards and controller ports to then have 5 in total is super cool! The ultimate storage and controller setup for an old console that rarely had a video game that had a use for more than 2 controllers (FIFA could go to 8 I believe). Whilst official multitaps made by SONY exist, this one was third party but without a name to track back to.

It has "TOURNAMENT" labelled on top but I find not a single record of it online. It is without doubt an aftermarket item but it does bother me that there is no label at all regarding the company name. I suppose a lot of products like these don't have an identifiable name for obvious reasons. Does this device work?

Lets find out!

The setup I have is my Fat PS2 with a memory card and controller in port 1 whilst the multitap takes up the second port. I have inserted a maximum of 4 memory cards in the multitap as shown and now we shall see if the PS2 can see them.

It does! You would rarely ever see such a display.

As you can see, there is 5 memory cards in the menu and the multitap both recognises PS1 and PS2 memory cards. It also denotes each card as 2-A, 2-B etc respectively! I went through each card as shown and my saves were all shown correctly. I did not test copying or deleting from the memory cards however.

The bonus was that every controller port worked perfectly too, amazing technology back then and even now. I wish I could make my own.

I recall that the controller ports did not work at all years ago but today it did, I must have just not plugged them in correctly. It was a little difficult taking out the memory cards and controllers but it was overall secure. It is unfortunate I do not see this multitap at all online because most multitaps I see are expensive for what it is worth. The only worth that is justifiable is the retro value but personally, whilst my multitap could act as a memory card storage area, having them stick out like this wouldn't be ideal. Despite that, it is certainly valuable if you still have friends that are interested in playing games with you from the PS2 era that required this device. I certainly would have loved it if I had found this as a child so we can all play together instead of taking turns on the controller.

And this concludes this mini investigation!

Why did I do this for a blog? I figured I will do something easy to ease myself into blogging but also because there was no record easily found for this item online so I did my (poor) documentation of it. I did enjoy doing this investigation and writing as I progressed, it was rather quite fun and I feel more inclined to do more, even if whatever follows is too niche for interest.

So what now? I will clean up this multitap as it does look quite worn and just have it with my PS2 so I don't misplace it and lose it. Despite it being aftermarket, I do like the design of it and it certainly functions as intended. I may test a game using it one day (I require more controllers). Overall, this was fun and I hope it was just something interesting enough so you read all the way down to here and I appreciate you for that.

See you in the next one! o/
